It’s Game Day Ya’ll!

Disclaimer: I did not go to school in the south nor did I go to OU (Illini for life, if you’re wondering). However, my boyfriend went to OU and is a die hard Sooner fan. Thus, every year for the past 4 years, we travel down to Dallas for the Red River Rivalry game between the University of Oklahoma and the University of Texas.

The first time I went to Dallas, it was a huge a culture shock to see southern belles decked out from head to toe in their school colors. I’m talking homemade spirit dresses, huge hair, bold lipstick, and of course, no outfit in the south is complete without cowboy boots.  If you’re like me, and fairly new to the whole decked out game day look, it can be really easy to be fashionable while supporting your favorite team.

Victoria’s Secret has their Collegiate Collection (and NFL & MLB lines) which make dressing cute for the game super simple.  If you have some time and you’re feeling crafty, I love this Game Day Dress tutorial made out of regular old tshirts. Jewelry and accessories are also a great way to add some color and sparkle to your look. I’m partial to our bow bracelets and bows in general. Since SSD jewelry is hand made, we can make many of our designs in an endless array of colors. If you can’t find your team’s colors email us at to order your spirit jewelry!

DIY: Making Inspirational Quote Prints with PowerPoint

I recently moved to a new apartment in the Lincoln Park area of Chicago, and I have been trying to find cute yet economical ways to decorate my home office. I love the look of a gallery wall, but with the number of frames and art work you need it can get pretty pricey. I’ve been seeing some adorable inspirational quote prints online, and I thought I would try to make my own. With this easy DIY you can make your own prints for nearly nothing and then you can just frame them up for a fab gallery wall!

Here is the current state of my office with a few DIY quote prints

No Photoshop? No problem!  Since I studied business in college, I’ve learned to manipulate PowerPoint for all sorts of projects besides presentations. One of the most fun things I’ve learned is how to make fun and inspirational quote prints to decorate my walls. Most computers should have PowerPoint, and if you have Microsoft Word, you most likely have PowerPoint.

I’m using the PowerPoint for Microsoft Office 2010, but most of the menus should be the same for the earlier version as well.

Pick your favorite quote and open up PowerPoint. The best part about making these prints is that you have full range to customize whatever you would like. Depending on which way you want your print to hang, select if you want your layout to be portrait or landscape. In this case, I’m going to change it to portrait.

To help keep everything aligned, go up to the View menu, and check whichever options will help you most. I’m going to check ruler and gridlines.

Now all you have to do is type out your quote. I like to separate the quote by the words in to separate text boxes. If you want to adjust all of the words at the same time just use the shortcut Ctrl A to select all of the words and then you can change the font and font sizes all at once. Arrange how you want your quote to look and you can utilize the gridlines to get everything aligned. I’m going to center all of my words in a vertical format and make the font size larger as you go towards the bottom of the print.

I downloaded the font for this print from It’s super simple, and then you just have to follow the directions on the site to pick a unique font.  Just remember what the name of the font was or you won’t be able to find it in your font list later.

To add color to you words, select the word(s) you want to change and click on the Format menu and then the Text Fill button. If you don’t see the color you want, click on More Fill Colors. You can select the Standard or Custom Tab to find your colors. I decided to go for an ombre look with my colors, so I chose a light blue to start off with.

For my next word, I clicked on the Text Fill button again and changed it to the same light blue color (under Recent Colors) and then clicked on More Fill Colors again. This will give me the same chart with where my first color started, so I can just go down the gradient on the left to get a darker color with each word.

print steps

Now, just go to the Main Menu button on the top right and click Save As and name your file and then make sure for Save as type, you select JPEG or PNG. Once you have your print saved, you can just print it out yourself or you can upload it to Walgreens or CVS and get it printed on photo paper to be picked up. Just note that depending on the resolution of your picture that printing really large sizes may not look that great. I’ve printed 8×10 prints, and they look just fine. Just realize that you may need to crop your print a bit to fit the standard photo sizes.

All done!

All done!

I bought IKEA NYTTJA frames since they were the cheapest, and I used Command Poster Strips to hang the frames. No nails for this apartment renter 🙂 So go ahead and make your own inspirational quote print, and you can definitely customize further with shapes and more colors! Endless Mean Girls and Bridesmaids quotes await…

This brings a smile on my face every time I walk past it

How The League Happened

If you follow SSD on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram, you probably saw the insane amount of posts about our jewelry being on the season premiere of the FXX show,  The League.

It all started back in June. I got an email from the costume stylist from the show about possibly sending in some of my jewelry for their show.  I couldn’t believe it! I have been watching The League since college, and I dabble dominate in a little Fantasy Football myself. I emailed the stylist back and said I would be more than happy to submit some of my pieces for the show. I never really wanted to get my hopes up since stylists usually have hordes of jewelry and clothing to pick from, so the chances that my jewelry would be picked were still slim.

Four grueling months later, the first episode of The League aired and within 1 minute of the show, I saw our Nautical Necklace and our Neon Yellow Statement Necklace on the fabulous Jayma Mays! You may also know her as Emma Pillsbury from Glee (another favorite of mine).  The stylist contacted me to also let me know that my jewelry will be on next week’s episode as well, so be sure to tune in, and see if you can spot a little See Song Designs sparkle on a Jayma again 🙂 If you missed this week’s episode, check out the scene where Jayma wears our jewelry here and some haphazard snaps I took while watching below!

Styling the Linden Neckalce – Black & White

As we continue to work on the new website, we wanted to add a little style inspiration back into the SSD blog. We’ll be posting how we would style some of our favorite SSD pieces with our favorite looks and trends!

With Fall pretty much here even though it is currently 85 degrees in Chicago and NYFW upon us, we bet that you will be seeing lots of black and white ensembles this season. Black and white is the ultimate classic color palette. It’s chic, simple, and has endless options. Our new Linden Statement Necklace is the perfect compliment to any black and white ensemble, The silver and gold accents on the Linden Necklace make mixing metals super easy. We’re all about a flowy blouse balanced with these amazing structured metallic J. Crew Sandals.  It’s probably even your last chance to show off that stellar pedicure before it gets too cold for open toed shoes. How would you style the Linden Necklace?

A Little Update

It’s been a fantastic first year of business here at See Song Designs. There is really nothing that can compare to the feeling of making your dreams become a reality. This first year has brought some tremendous highs and lows which have taught me countless lessons as an entrepreneur and a jewelry designer. I really can’t thank each of you enough from my friends and family, to the amazing bloggers and boutique buyers I’ve worked with, to the media and press that have so graciously recognized my jewelry, and most importantly, to each and every person that has bought a piece of See Song Designs Jewelry. With each piece being personally designed and made, it is really amazing to see my customers wear and love the jewelry that I lovingly make with my own hands. In the end, making jewelry makes me happy, and I am ecstatic that you all share my love and vision with every piece you own.

With Fall right around the corner, I will be debuting our Fall and Holiday collection on a new website. Our website will be launching soon and you can buy jewelry directly from the site for U.S. and Canadian customers. International orders will still be available through Etsy or through special requests. Here’s a little sneak peek at the new site!

On September 4, SSD jewelery will be featured on the show, The League, on FXX. A very special surprise guest star will be wearing SSD, so be sure to tune into the season premier to see who it is! If you keep up with the show, you probably already know who it is 😉

Again, thank you for your love and support, and I can’t wait to share all of See Song Designs’ successes with you. Make sure you follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to get up to date news on what we’re up to 🙂

See Song Designs for ShopBevel

Awhile back, I entered a design contest with Shopbevel. You may have remembered voting for this jewelry design contest where the challenge was to design something that incorporated neon. I submitted my Neon Pink Crystal Cord Bracelet and ended up being one of the winners! Well, my design is up and running over at the Shopbevel site, and they did a fantastic job of photographing and styling my bracelet. Check out the photos below, and you can get the bracelet here! Only the Neon Pink is available at Shopbevel, but you can get the black and confetti versions directly from my website as well.

Recap: Chicago Sidewalk Sale 2013

Last week, See Song Designs was a vendor at the 7th Annual Chicago Sidewalk Sale in Daley Plaza. The weather was perfect, and it was great to meet some of our loyal fans and interact with new customers! I also got to debut our new table set-up which featured a brand new black and white chevron table cloth which was a great compliment to the bold and bright jewelry. The Sidewalk Sale was sponsored by The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and Fashion Focus Chicago, and each day included a fashion show featuring some of the designers selling at the Sidewalk Sale and Factor Models. One of the best parts of doing events is being able to make friends and network with other designers who have a similar passion for fashion and design. My booth neighbor was Megan Lee Designs, and I bought my new favorite t-shirt from her line of super comfy and cute clothing. Be sure to check our Where to Buy page to see where we’ll be selling next and sign up for our email list so you never miss the chance of checking out See Song Designs Jewelry in person. Check out some of the pictures from the Sidewalk Sale below!
